Drawing on the unique power of the arts, this innovative offering combines live theatre performance with experiential learning.

A performance of The Flin Flon Cowboy at Theatre Passe Muraille in Toronto will serve as a launch pad for discussion and reflection around the role that narrative methods play in framing our understanding of inequities and inclusion in healthcare.

A Q&A with the creative team geared towards a health professional audience will follow the performance, as well as a debrief and reflective writing activity facilitated by Dr. Sarah Kim (Medical Education Health Humanities Theme Lead, Temerty Faculty of Medicine).

Ultimately, participants will deepen their reflection on the intersectionality of disability with mental health, addiction, sexuality, and homelessness. Participants will also develop a deeper understanding of how arts-based pedagogical tools encourage dialogue and reflection on critical issues around marginalized populations in healthcare.

About the Play

The Flin Flon Cowboy is a new autobiographical musical that chronicles the extraordinary life of Ken Harrower, a gay disabled artist and singer. Set to the sounds of original country music, Ken’s story begins in the enigmatic town of Flin Flon, Manitoba, and unfolds through his harrowing experiences as a child with a disability in Winnipeg’s foster care system. Defying expectations and refusing to submit to life in an institution, Ken escapes the prairies and embarks on a journey to find connection and belonging in Toronto’s vibrant gay community.
