Creative Lead Damian Tarnopolsky Publishes New Chapbook “A Friend to Words”

Congratulations to Creative Lead Damian Tarnopolsky on the publication of a new chapbook, “A Friend to Words.” Inspired by a Zen tale by Nakajima Atsushi, “A Friend to Words” is a short story featuring ants, writers, trips to Paris, and trips to Saskatchewan. Part comic fable and part satirical nightmare, it is available directly from the publisher, Espresso Chapbooks.

On the genre and form: a chapbook is a small, short, and relatively inexpensive book, often containing poetry or other literary works.

Damian was also profiled on Type Books’ newsletter, The Juncture, which explored the many facets of his work as a writer, teacher, and long-time friend of the independent bookstore.

The interview traces Damian’s literary beginnings through to the publication of his chapbook A Friend to Words, while exploring books, performances, and influences that continue to shape his creative life, including Uncle Vanya.

The discussion highlights Damian’s role within the NBM Lab, and how he teaches medical professionals to engage with story, reflect on their experiences, and find new ways of understanding both themselves and their patients. His reflections on narrative, teaching, and the emotional terrain of healthcare offer a meaningful window into the NBM Lab’s values.
