Jean Grandbois has refused to set roots, having lived everywhere from the cold winters of Alberta to the scorching heat of Southern California and the windy Netherlands. When not writing software, he is writing novels, renovating his house, or making herbal soap with his daughter. Nursing Flagstop is Jean’s third novel and tells a quietly powerful story of music, regret, and the fragile ways we try to matter.
Told by an unreliable narrator in his sixties, who has been obsessed with a song called “Borderless” since he was a child, the main character sets out to find his forgotten idol and ends up taking an elderly man into his home after a crash course in home care. The story follows his journey into the world of caregiving, where he stumbles and learns, as the bond between fan and idol turns to caregiving.
