“You Are My Son” by Daniel Gorman

Daniel Gorman, child and adolescent psychiatrist at SickKids, Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto, and NBM Lab Foundational Certificate alum, reflects on his son’s emotional struggle at Disney World in “You Are My Son,” a sequel to his piece “I Am Your Father.”

While “I Am Your Father,” published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (February 2024), explores the challenges of parenting from Daniel’s perspective, “You Are My Son” shifts to understanding his son’s experience with greater empathy. Both essays, the latter published in the Canadian Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Journal (Volume 33, Number 3, Pages 68-69), offer thoughtful perspectives on parenting and emotional growth.
